Tencent

The largest online community in China.

Tencent is a Chinese technology and entertainment platform. It is one of the highest grossing multimedia companies in the world based on revenue.

Why do we own it?

Tencent combines social media, payments, fintech and Cloud services to create one of the most valuable virtual universes in existence. It has become a vital tool for daily life in China, enabling users to communicate with friends and loved ones, pay for everyday items, invest, watch television and play games.

Tencent is helping drive Chinese economic development on a massive scale, with over 1 billion people and transacting through its social media platforms Weixin and WeChat. It is among the world’s largest gaming companies and one of the most significant providers of cloud infrastructure services in China. Beyond its core business, Tencent has also become one of the world's largest venture capitalists with stakes in a vast array of emerging growth companies.

Although Tencent has attracted more regulatory attention in recent years, the platform underpins many of the Chinese government’s aspirations around economic growth.

Who is key?

Ma Huateng, also known as Pony Ma, is the founder of Tencent, and he has been key in enabling the company to remain adaptable as it has scaled. James Mitchell, Chief Strategy Officer, has also played an influential role.
