Tom Slater

Tom Slater

Manager

Tom Slater is Manager of Scottish Mortgage. He joined Baillie Gifford in 2000 and became a Partner of the firm in 2012. Tom joined the Scottish Mortgage Team as Deputy Manager in 2009, before assuming the role of Manager in 2015. Beyond that, he is the Head of the US Equities Team and a member of another long-term growth equity strategy. During his time at Baillie Gifford, Tom has also worked in the Developed Asia and UK Equity teams. Tom’s investment interest is focused on high-growth companies both in listed equity markets and as an investor in private companies. He graduated BSc in Computer Science with Mathematics from the University of Edinburgh in 2000.

Lawrence Burns

Deputy Manager

Lawrence Burns was appointed Deputy Manager of Scottish Mortgage in 2021. He joined Baillie Gifford in 2009 and became a Partner of the firm in 2020. During his time at the firm, his investment interest has become focused on transformative growth companies. He has been a member of the International Growth Portfolio Construction Group since October 2012 and, in 2020, became a manager of Vanguard’s International Growth Fund. Lawrence is also co-manager of the International Concentrated Growth and Global Outliers strategies. Prior to this, he also worked in both the Emerging Markets and UK Equity teams. Lawrence graduated BA in Geography from the University of Cambridge in 2009.

Claire Shaw

Portfolio Director

Claire Shaw is a Portfolio Director and plays a prominent role in servicing Scottish Mortgage’s UK shareholder base. Before joining in 2019, she spent over a decade as a fund manager with a focus on managing European equity portfolios for a global client base. With a background in analysing companies and communicating investment ideas, Claire is also responsible for creating engaging content that makes the Scottish Mortgage portfolio accessible to all its shareholders. Beyond that, she works closely with the managers, meeting with portfolio companies and conducting in-depth portfolio discussions with shareholders.

Stewart Heggie

Stewart Heggie

Commercial Director

Stewart Heggie is a Commercial Director, focused on serving the needs of Scottish Mortgage shareholders. Prior to joining in 2019, he spent 15 years as a discretionary fund manager, before which he helped design the investment platform of a large UK bank. Nowadays, Stewart enjoys a varied role that spans several areas involved in running a listed investment company. He plays a key role in developing the company’s strategic direction and broadening its ownership. Beyond that, he works closely with the managers to maintain current portfolio knowledge, regularly meets with potential and existing overseas shareholders, and acts as a key contact for the board of directors.

Michael Wylie

Michael Wylie

Head of Fund Operations

Michael Wylie is a Partner of Baillie Gifford and Head of Fund Operations at the firm. He oversees the provision to Scottish Mortgage of financial reporting, company secretarial and administration services and provides advice and guidance to the Board on regulatory and governance matters. He joined Baillie Gifford in 2015 following a 20-year career as a private practice lawyer, for the last eight years of which he was a Corporate Partner in a Scottish-headquartered UK commercial law firm.

Campbell Mackenzie

Campbell MacKenzie

Accounting and Company Secretarial Manager

Campbell MacKenzie is an Accounting and Company Secretarial Manager responsible for preparing financial reporting for Scottish Mortgage, providing company secretarial services and delivering management information to the Board. The Board’s point of contact on day-to-day operational matters, he liaises with key service providers, including Scottish Mortgage’s auditor, registrar, depositary and lending institutions. A certified chartered accountant, Campbell joined Baillie Gifford in 1999 and is a member of the firm’s private company valuation group and the AIC Technical Committee.

Niamh Kidd

Niamh Kidd

Communications Manager

Niamh Kidd is a Communications Manager, responsible for coordinating the production of insightful content for shareholders across various media platforms. Prior to joining the Scottish Mortgage Team, she spent four years in Baillie Gifford’s Intellectual Capital Team coordinating creative content across its many strategies. She is a key decision-maker in the overall communications strategy and is responsible for its implementation, working alongside multiple in-house and external creative teams.
